Developed by the Department of Environment and Conservation NSW, the easy-to-use method involves simply inputting the quantity a council area is recycling.
The calculator can then convert that information into saved greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy conserved as well as landfill space saved.
"The recycling calculator is a great way for communities to see at a glance what a difference their recycling efforts make in real terms" said Environment Minister, Bob Debus.
"When we think how the little daily recycling things we do can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing other environmental benefits, it really does encourage us to keep up the effort for the sake of our environment and our future."
"I encourage everyone to find out about their local recycling rates and put them through the calculator; I’m sure many people would be surprised at just how effective their efforts can be."
The calculator is available online from environment.nsw.gov.au
