| Rainwater Tank Rebate |

The NSW Government Rainwater Tank Rebate is available to households across New South Wales from 1 July 2007 as part of the NSW Government's $310 million Climate Change Fund. The rebate of up to $1500 is an incentive to install a new rainwater storage system and connect this system to a toilet and washing machine. More |

| Sustainable radio |

A Greek Sustainability Series will be launched on SBS Radio in August 2007 to encourage Greek Australians to live more sustainably. The ten-part series will be broadcast to Greek listeners in Sydney and Melbourne on Tuesdays and Fridays in eastern states. More |

Outstanding achievements of the Integrated Sustainability Education Partnership Program were celebrated at the Partnerships for Sustainability Conference in Sydney on 28 June 2007. The results of nine projects were showcased as a series of displays and workshops. More |

A free new publication, 'Easy Guide to Organic Gardening' provides gardeners and their families with advice on how to avoid exposure to harmful chemicals found in synthetic pesticides, fertilisers and herbicides that are used in the garden. More |

| Our Earth, Our Stories |

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW launched its second successful community photographic awards ceremony, ‘Our Earth, Our Stories' on the Central Coast on 13 July 2007. Supporting the 2007 exhibition is a new publication, 'The Our Earth, Our Stories Handbook' – a guide on how to run a similar project in any community. More |

| Urban Sustainability Reserve Grants announced |

Seven more major projects have been funded by the NSW Environmental Trust's Urban Sustainability Program. The recipients of the seven Reserve Grants were announced by the NSW Environmental Trust in May 2007, bringing total Round 1 funding to over $32.8 million for 35 major projects. More |

| Joining forces for Urban Sustainability |

The Urban Sustainability Support Alliance is an exciting new partnership brought together by the NSW Environmental Trust's Urban Sustainability Program. The Urban Sustainability Support Alliance will work with Councils across the State to build their capacity to develop, plan, implement and communicate on urban sustainability projects. More |

| Environmental compliance for marina operators |

Practical advice on how operators of marinas, boatsheds and slipways can make their business environmentally compliant – and save money while saving energy and other resources – is available in 'Environmental Action for Marinas, Boatsheds and Slipways', a publication released by the DECC on 18 July 2007. | Sustainable Places, Sustainable Tourism |

The new NSW Environmental Trust program Sustainable Places will enable local government to work with small tourism businesses so these businesses can better manage their impact on the environment. A Sustainable Places Tourism Kit is scheduled for statewide release in 2008. More |

| Workshops on Sulfidic sediments in inland catchments |

The Murray Darling Freshwater Research Centre has shown that acid sulfate soils are more widespread in inland areas than previously thought. To minimise the risk of environmental harm from these soils, the learnings from this research will be made widely available to farmers, developers, inland CMAs and government through a series of workshops to be conducted in inland catchments in late 2007. | Organic compost on the playing field |

Trials held on three Penrith sporting fields have shown that use of recycled organic compost as topdressing or during construction can reduce playing surface hardness by 25 to 40%, even during times of drought. More |

| CleanOut participation on the increase |

Participation rates and collection volumes for CleanOut from March to June 2007 are up on previous years, highlighting the success of the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change's household chemical collections program. More |

| Crushed glass is a new substitute for sand |

Recycled, crushed glass can be used instead of sand to embed water mains pipes and sewer mains pipes in their trenches. While up to 40% of glass from municipal collections currently goes to landfill, recent trials have shown that use of crushed glass for pipe-embedment can reduce this wastage while conserving natural sand and reducing the impact of quarrying on the environment. | Green Capital taken up by Big Business |

The Total Environment Centre's Green Capital Sustainable Staff Training program has successfully completed two pilot training days with Diageo Australia and Philips Electronics Australia. Both companies committed to the training as a fresh opportunity to integrate sustainability initiatives across their businesses. More |

| Banksia Award Winners 2007 |

The Banksia Sustainability Award 2007 sponsored by the Sustainability Programs Division of the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW has been awarded to Westpac for 'Unlocking Value'. The Banksia Awards 2007 were announced in Sydney on 20 July, with Westpac also winning the prestigious Gold Banksia Award from all other category winners. More |

The prestigious Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities Environmental Education Award 2007 sponsored by the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW has been won by Christian Community Aid for its project 'Chinese Leisure Learning Goes Green'. More |

| Enviro Inspiro! 2007 |

The winner of Enviro Inspiro! 2007 is Moree Secondary College for 'Captain Enviro!' - a project inspired by the 1990s cartoon Captain Planet. The students investigated environmental issues in their area and then acted on these issues in ways that helped the physical environment of their school. More |
