Sustainable Schools NSW
School children enjoying the bush in their school playground

The Sustainable Schools NSW website will be launched in May 2007.

The site will enable all schools, and organisations that work with them, to participate in the Sustainable Schools NSW Program.

School communities are powerful agents of change. In NSW there are around 3,300 schools, with over one million students - students who then share knowledge and inspiration with their families and the communities in which they live.

Many NSW schools already have innovative approaches to sustainability education. Schools are helping their local communities to reduce plastic bags, setting up community environmental education centres, rehabilitating local creeks and reducing their energy and water use.

The site will be useful for teachers, Principals, students, the school community and those who work with schools, for example, local government, agencies, volunteer groups, and businesses.

What can schools do on the site?

Schools will be able to:

  • Register to participate in Sustainable Schools NSW and gain recognition as a sustainable school
  • Write a school environmental management plan
  • Monitor the school's progress
  • Calculate the schools environmental impact
  • Share achievements, lessons and successes
  • Find resources for planning, implementing and reviewing sustainability education activities

How can you and your organisation participate?

Individuals and organisations that work with schools can also participate by registering and sharing projects, web links and achievements on the site and find out what others are doing in NSW, nationally and internationally. Organisations can also add their own school programs to the website through the Sustainable Schools NSW 3 year framework.

Sustainable Schools NSW is a NSW government initiative, and part of the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative.
