2007 Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards

A residential energy conservation project, a large scale city wide sustainability project, an eco-friendly youth centres project and sustainable procurement strategies were the winners of the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW (DECC) sponsored categories at the 2007 Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards.

Acting Minister for Climate Change, Environment and Water, the Hon. Nathan Rees attended the annual awards ceremony at Parliament House in Sydney on Tuesday 4 December 2007 and presented awards to the following winners:

Tim Rogers from DECC and Bernadette Thomas
from the North East Waste Forum which won
the LGSA Environmental Education Award.

  • Climate Change Adaption and Mitigation Award - Randwick City Council for Home Energy Makeover, a major residential energy conservation program
  • Energy and Water Savings Award – City of Sydney for Sustainable Sydney 2030, a landmark project, incorporating leading energy and water targets and projects, designed to ensure Sydney remains sustainable
  • Environmental Education Award – North East Waste Forum for the Eco-friendly Youth Project, which promotes the adoption of environmental practices including waste reduction and water and energy conservation within youth centres and programs provided by centres
  • Sustainable Purchasing Award – Warringah Council for implementing strategies to introduce sustainability reform within procurement of goods and services, including targeting fuel consumption, ensuring high take up of recycled products and products manufactured form sustainable materials and the use of non-toxic biodegradable cleaning products.

The Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards, initiated by the Local Government and Shires Associations of New South Wales (LGSA) in 1998, are open to all councils in NSW and aim to recognise outstanding achievements by NSW local government in managing and protecting the environment.

DECC warmly congratulates all the 2007 Local Government Excellence in the Environment Award winners.
